Papaya Spicy Salad with Grilled Chicken
som dtam gai yaang kaao nieow
ส้มตำ ไก่ย่าง

This is Som Tam which is a famous dish from Isaan. It is a Papaya Spicy Salad. It is often served with grilled chicken and sticky rice. This set cost me only 40 baht. It is up to you hoe spicy you want it to be.

This is my favourite weekend breakfast. An excellent hangover cure (for me) and has become comfort food to me.

One tip: There are two distinct varieties, the Issan version which is a bit darker, more fishy and often has the raw soft shelled crabs. The other version is the Bangkok style, which looks more like the one pictured, but beware of this version as it contains peanuts.

If eaten after the somtam, the chicken really takes the heat of the chillis out of your mouth.
